Living In Markham

As the fourth-largest city in the GTA, Markham has become one of the region’s most popular places to live. It’s an incredibly diverse and multicultural city with a large East Asian and South Asian population. Markham is also home to Pacific Mall, the largest Asian indoor market in North America! With three GO Transit stations, Markham is a highly convenient GTA community, and it’s also just 30 km from Toronto’s downtown.

Unionville

Unionville is Markham’s most popular neighbourhood and sits in the middle of the city. It is home to one of the most picturesque village settings in the GTA—the historic Main Street. This area hosts many annual events and features a large greenspace, Toogood Park, where residents go to relax and enjoy the serenity of the park’s pond.

Unionville is a relatively quiet, family-friendly neighbourhood that has grown steadily thanks to developments near Highway 7. Unionville is home to the Crosby Memorial Centre where families can skate, the Frederick Horseman Varley Art Gallery where you can enjoy works from the famed Group of Seven and other artists, the Millenium Bandstand where the community hosts its free summer concert series, and where you can catch plenty of live performances. Unionville is also home to the Markville Shopping Centre and dozens of big brand name stores that make it easy to meet all of your essential daily needs.

Homes in Unionville include a wide range of options across price ranges, which is part of the reason why this is such a popular neighbourhood. In Unionville’s older areas there are plenty of heritage homes built between the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, featuring Victorian architecture, charming front porches, and large gardens.

There are also some townhomes and a handful of infill homes throughout Unionville’s older enclaves. Near Toogood Park, you’ll find a cluster of estate homes on large lots with mature trees. Outside of Unionville’s core, there are single-family homes built during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Close to Highway 7, there are newer townhomes and condos that provide entry-level real estate options perfect for first-time buyers looking to settle in this dynamic neighbourhood.

Thornhill

The Thornhill neighbourhood located in Markham’s southwest corner is a popular and unique community as it’s actually a part of two cities, Markham and Vaughan. Thornhill, Markham is known for its quintessential Heritage Conservation District, a picturesque enclave that is home to many mid-19th century homes and is an influential part of the neighbourhood that has inspired the architecture of several residential pockets in Thornhill.

Other areas of Thornhill including Royal Orchard and Grandview Estates feature real estate with generous lots on tree-lined streets and similar architecture as the homes in the conservation district. There are also a number of townhomes and condos that are relatively affordable, providing entry-level real estate opportunities into the Markham market.

Residents in Thornhill can visit the Thornhill Community Centre for family fun and activities for all. There’s a youth centre, indoor track and ice rinks, pool, and more. The community centre is also home to a gym and wellness studio. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the neighbourhood’s many greenspaces including the Pomona Mills Park and its conservation area which features scenic paths through the area.

A quintessential family community, Thornhill remains an attractive option for young families and first-time buyers. As a multicultural community with everything from picturesque greenspaces to rich history and affordable real estate, Markham is a wonderful community in which to plant roots.
